PCTM Math Contest Rules

  • Students are invited based on their AMC-12 scores.  The cut-off varies from year to year.
  • Students are permitted to use any non-QWERTY keyboard calculator.  This includes the TI-83, 84, and 89 but not the 92.  No calculators will be provided.
  • Awards are presented for individual and team winners.  Individual winners will receive a plaque and a check for $150 (1st place), $100 (2nd place), and $50 (3rd place).  Members of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams will receive a plaque.
  • All participants will receive a t-shirt and certificate.
  • There will be 4-5 students on each team.  Each team will have the same approximate AMC score.  The contest will consist of team as well as individual questions.
    • There will be 20 individual questions.  Students will have one hour to complete this portion of the competition.
    • There will be 10 team questions.  The time limit is 30 minutes.
    • The last part of the contest is a relay event.  The members of each team are seated in a row.  Each person has a question in front of him or her.  Only the first person in the row has all the information he/she needs to solve their individual problem.  Each successive person needs to use the answer from the person from the person ahead of him or her to solve their problem.  There is a time component to the relay event.  Your team’s score depends not only on having the correct final answer, but also on the time it took for your team to complete the relay
