NPCTM President's Message

I do hope that the 2007 – 2008 school term is turning out to be a good one in your professional career!

In case you were not able to attend our Fall or Spring Meetings, allow me to summarize what transpired: The NPCTM Spring Meeting took place on Thursday evening, the 26th April 2007 beginning at 6P.M. with a business meeting followed by the program at 7 P.M. and reception at 8 P.M.  The NPCTM Spring Meeting was sponsored by Harcourt School Publishing and its sales representative, Mr. Barry Ruckel, who also awarded most valuable gift certificates from Harcourt as door prizes.  The members of NPCTM are most appreciative of what Barry and Harcourt School Publishing have done for NPCTM over the years!  “The Frank J. Sottile Memorial Scholarship Award” in the amount of $750 was presented to Ben Collins, a senior at Mid-Valley High School.  Also a $500 scholarship award was presented to Michael Lacey, a senior from Pocono Mountain West High School.   Also former NPCTM membership chair, Ms. Rosemary Boland, received the “NPCTM Outstanding Contribution Award.”

The evening’s program, “What’s New in Mathematics at PDE,” was presented by Dr. Frank Marburger, PDE mathematics education advisor.  Each attendee received a CD of the material Frank presented which was appreciated by everyone.  Frank was also presented with “The 2007 NPCTM  Friend of Mathematics Award” for all his contributions to mathematics education, particularly in the Northeast. Frank did a super job for which we thank him.

On Thursday, the 17th May 2007, “The Dr. Frank J. Sottile Memorial Mathematics Contest” was held at Marywood University. Close to three hundred students participated in this contest for students in grades 5 - 8, inc.  This was the 18th year for this contest under the
guidance of the present contest chairpersons:  Mrs. Karen Voigt and Mrs. Susan Kulikowski Gesford from the Mountain View School District who did a wonderful job.  As always the contest was a fun day for everyone involved.  In fact the youngest participant was Susan Gesford’s recently born son—Congratulations to the Gesfords!!

I want to welcome to the Executive Board of NPCTM our new secretary, Christine Walker, from the Scranton School District. I know she will do a super job as secretary for which we thank
her in advance.

The Executive Board of NPCTM will be meeting in August 2007 to plan our agenda for the 2007 -2008 school term.  Please note that our Spring Meeting will be on Thursday, 24th April 2008. NPCTM Program chairs, Ms. Gen Battisto and Dr. Barbara Cozza, always do a superb job in planning our programs which hopefully are professionally beneficial to you.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY...
please get involved and plan to attend the 2008 PCTM Annual Meeting
hosted by NPCTM on November 5, 6, and 7, 2008 at the Resort at
Split Rock—Lake Harmony, PA.  Ms. Gen Battisto and Mr. Vince Pricci,
vice-president of NPCTM, will be serving as Co-Chairs for this most
important conference.  NPCTM have hosted other successful PCTM Annual
Meetings and this one should be even better!!!  Please contact Gen or Vince
to serve on some committee—we need your help as always!!

As always, it is my pleasure to serve as president of NPCTM for the
sixth consecutive year!  If I can be of any assistance to you at any time,
please feel free to contact me.  Again have a wonderful school year!!!

MATHEMATICIAN’S QUOTE: “This, therefore, is mathematics: she gives life to her own discoveries;
she awakens the mind and purifies the intellect; she brings light to our
intrinsic ideas; she abolishes the oblivion and ignorance which are ours by birth.”
